And We’re Off!!!

Yes, that is right ladies and gentlemen, the general election campaign has unofficially started.  With Mitt “severely conservative” Romney leading the Republican elephants and President “No Drama” Obama, leading the Democrats; it is going to be a long 7 months.  First thing’s first, I have no love for the Republican Party. I think most of them, with very few exceptions, are a bunch of lying hypocrites. You know the sort, “Do as I say, not as I do!”  They claim to be the “big tent” party, yet if you are black, Hispanic, gay, Jewish, a woman, or any other kind of minority; they don’t want you.  They are a “big tent” party, as long as you are a rich, straight, white male.

I just wanted to let you know that this is not going to be a love letter to Mitt.  At least with Newt and Rick, one knew where they stood.  With Mitt, your standing with him depends on polls and which way the wind is blowing.  I am not sure he stands for anything real, except to say anything and do anything to get elected.  Case in point?  He lambastes the Ivy League schools as those of the rich and elite liberals.  Yet, where did he go to college?  Yes, that’s right ladies and gentlemen, he went to Harvard.  So, it’s okay to ridicule and degrade your Alma Mater if you are a Republican Presidential Candidate.  I am sure he will or has blasted the New York Times as well (calling it the Lame Street Times) I just haven’t seen it yet.

But, what has really gotten my panties in knot is the latest speech Mr. Romney gave in front of the Associated Press. In that speech, as he does in most every other speech, he told blatant lies.  There were some about the President, some about policy and some about everything else.  Here are a few of my favorites:

“With all the challenges the nation faces, this is not the time for President Obama’s hide-and-seek campaign,“-referring to the fact that he thinks the President has not been honest about his ideas for the nation.  When in reality, Mitt said this a few days earlier…“If I tell you what I’m planning to do, I won’t get elected.”

I am not a pro, but I think when you say something like that, it means people are not going to like what you are going to do.  So, what is it exactly that Mitt is planning on doing?  It would seem to me that he is the one planning the “hide-and-seek campaign.  He also stated in his speech that the President is the one who wants to do away with Medicare.  Yet, in the Ryan budget, that is exactly what the Republicans do.  Although they paint is as giving seniors a “choice” in healthcare, what it really does is dissolve Medicare as we know it and gives seniors vouchers to by private insurance.  Hmm, that sounds a bit like what Obama’s mandate is in his Affordable Care Act; we will give you a voucher, or an incentive to purchase your insurance.  Except, with the Medicare, you can be sure insurance companies will not be giving any discounts.

Say goodbye to this card if the Ryan Budget is fully adopted.

I also bet that services people depend on, like food stamps and medicaid will be de-funded as well.  I remember back when George W. was President.  He got a bill passed called “No Child Left Behind”.  It was hailed as a landmark education bill by both Democrats and Republicans.  It had bipartisan support.  It was passed by the House and Senate and then….NOTHING!  NCLB became an unfunded mandate.  The money was never made available to schools.  Well, they don not have to do away with some of these programs; they can just stop funding them. It’s that simple.

All of this and it is only the first week in April.  Well, it is going to be a long election season. Will Romney used his “scorched earth” campaign to win the White House in the fall?  It didn’t matter what his positions were, all that mattered was tearing apart the other candidate.  Will Romney actually run on ideas and his record as Governor of Massachusetts.  You did not really hear him talk about that much during the campaign, did you?  Interesting.  I hope that whichever Romney shows up, the President is able to wipe the floor with him.  Until the Republican party moves back to the center, they are going to hemorrhage votes.  I am not at a place where I am going to give a prediction on the November election, but I will say Romney has a lot of  ‘splainin’ to do.
